The Host Behind the Game Night: James Maumus and 11 Years of Live Trivia at George’s

cetriviatampafinals2022-45

Every successful Game Night has something in common. Behind the questions, the laughs, and the friendly competition, there is a host who brings the room together.

In Baton Rouge, that host is James Maumus.

For eleven years, James has hosted Live Trivia at George’s Restaurant on O’Neal Road. What began as a simple weekly event has grown into a tradition that regularly brings together 40 to 50 players on the patio each week. More importantly, it has become a community that players and staff alike look forward to every Thursday night.

While venues and formats matter, the real heartbeat of a Game Night often comes down to the host. In this case, James has spent more than a decade creating an atmosphere where players feel welcome, engaged, and eager to return.

A Game Night That Grew With the Community

When James first started hosting Live Trivia at George’s in February of 2015, the patio already hosted live music several nights a week. Live Trivia was simply another event being added to the lineup.

Over time, something interesting happened. The Live Trivia crowd grew stronger, week after week, until it became the one regular event that remained on the patio. Today, it stands as the main weekly gathering there, drawing consistent crowds and loyal teams who rarely miss a week.

That kind of longevity rarely happens without a host who takes pride in the experience.

For James, hosting has always been about more than asking questions. It is about creating a place where people enjoy being together.

Leading Through Challenging Moments

Over the past eleven years, James has hosted Live Trivia through moments that could easily have ended a weekly event.

In August of 2016, severe flooding in Baton Rouge forced George’s Restaurant to close after taking on water. Many of the regular players were also dealing with flood damage in their own homes.

Yet when the restaurant reopened just a week or two later, the Live Trivia Game Night returned as well. For many players, gathering again for trivia was a welcome return to something familiar during a difficult time.

Years later, the COVID shutdowns created another pause. For a short period, Live Trivia could not be held because gatherings were restricted.

Even then, the sense of community remained strong. Many of the regular players still stopped by George’s every Thursday to pick up food and support the restaurant, keeping the tradition alive until Game Night could return.

When outdoor gatherings were allowed again, the restaurant manager Kevin reached out to James right away and asked him to restart the show.

James suggested waiting until the restaurant had a chance to rebuild business first.

Kevin’s reply captured how valuable the show had become.

“James, you are our profit.”

Creating a Signature Game Night Experience

One of the things that sets James apart as a host is the personality he brings to the Game Night.

At the beginning of every show, he plays the song “Joy To The World” by Three Dog Night. It was the number one song on the charts when he was born, and over time it has become the signal that Live Trivia is about to begin.

The moment players hear that song, they know it is time to grab their answer sheets and get ready to play.

James also adds personal touches that make the experience feel unique. Throughout the year, he collects players’ birthdays from answer sheets. Each May, he hosts a special Birthday Game Night where he plays the number one song from each player’s birth date.

It is a small gesture, but it reflects the care he puts into creating a memorable experience.

The Teams That Make It Fun

Over eleven years, James has watched dozens of teams come and go, while several have become regular fixtures at George’s.

Teams like Pismo Beach often finish near the top, but when groups like Fossil Fools, Underachievers, or HOT NUTS! manage to win, the patio erupts with cheers.

Every so often, a surprise team like Trivia Newton John, The Overthinkers, or Nerds of a Feather pulls off an unexpected victory and keeps the competition lively.

James encourages that friendly rivalry while keeping the atmosphere welcoming for everyone. That balance is part of what keeps the crowd returning week after week.

Traditions That Keep Players Coming Back

Part of what makes a long running Game Night special is the traditions that develop over time.

At George’s, James hosts themed Game Nights around holidays like Halloween and Christmas, where players bring candy and treats to share. During Carnival season, someone almost always brings a King Cake to enjoy during the show.

These traditions have grown naturally over the years, turning a weekly trivia event into something that feels more like a gathering of friends.

Even the unexpected moments become part of the story. Recently, the players discovered a possum living in the rafters above the patio. Naturally, the group named him George the Rally Possum, and he has become a bit of an unofficial mascot for the Game Night.

The Impact of a Dedicated Host

When people think about Live Trivia, they often focus on the questions or the competition. Yet the long term success of a Game Night often depends on the host.

James has spent eleven years building relationships with players and with the staff at George’s. The restaurant team enjoys having trivia each week and often asks him what the halftime and final questions will be so they can play along while working.

When James considered the long term impact of the show, he realized something remarkable. If you add up what he and his wife have spent at George’s over the years and multiply it by the spending of the regular players, the Live Trivia community has likely contributed close to a million dollars to the restaurant.

That kind of economic impact starts with a host who consistently creates a reason for people to come back.

Eleven Years of Game Night Leadership

After more than a decade, James Maumus continues to host Live Trivia at George’s with the same enthusiasm he brought to the first show in 2015.

Each week, players gather on the patio ready to compete, laugh, and enjoy a night out together.

Hosts like James are a reminder that a great Game Night is not just about trivia questions. It is about the energy a host brings to the room and the community that grows around it.

For eleven years, James has been the voice that welcomes players, starts the music, and turns an ordinary Thursday night into something people look forward to.

And when “Joy To The World” begins to play on the patio at George’s, everyone knows exactly what that means.

Game Night is about to begin.
